On June 21, amendments to the law on organ and tissue transplantation were adopted in the second reading in the House of Representatives. Since Belarus occupies a leading position among the CIS countries in terms of the volume of transplants performed, lawyers and doctors believe that the change in the legislative framework is particularly timely. First of all, a single transplant register will be created in the republic, where data on patients' disagreement on the use of their tissues and organs in case of death will be entered. Such applications will be processed in healthcare institutions, and entered into the unified register within six hours from the moment of registration. The changes will also affect issues related to living donors. After the amendments come into force, only a close relative or spouse can become a living organ or tissue donor (except for stem cells and bone marrow) for a person.
